Views:9210|Rating:4.84|View Time:12:20Minutes|Likes:60|Dislikes:2 Keeping true to the roots of country music is not only a lovely sentiment of nostalgia, but a necessity for the growth of an artist…and staying true to the roots just comes naturally for Trey Hensley. After picking up a guitar at the age of 10, he quickly took the bluegrass world by storm —even performing on the Grand Ole Opry when he was 11. Several years ago, the artist followed his heart and interests into the world of Country music.
Now, with his second country CD, titled “It Is What It Is,” that was released on July 4th, the Jonesborough, TN native is heading out playing his own brand of traditional honky-tonk music. Called a “bona fide hillbilly rock star” by Marty Stuart, Trey’s new CD is a combination of new, radio-friendly contemporary songs as well as songs with the classic sound of some of his heroes. The release offers covers originally performed by Elton John, Conway Twitty, Jimmy Dickens and The Gaither Vocal band. He’s also included covers written by Charlie Daniels, Larry Gatlin and Jeannie Seeley, along with songs that have never been released written by Steve Wariner, the great Johnny Russell and Chuck Allan Floyd. Some legendary singers even stopped in to sing with Hensley on the CD.
“It was unbelievable to me that some of my heroes would actually come in and record with me,” Hensley said from the studio in Nashville. The special guests include Steve Wariner; Janie Fricke, and Duane Allen, Joe Bonsall and Richard Sterban of The Oak Ridge Boys. “For as long as I can remember, music has been a focal point of my life. These artists have played the background music to my life, so to hear their voices on the same tracks as mine, is an honor and a dream come true.”
Trey is in the studio currently working on his third Country CD which will include mostly original songs written by Hensley. It is scheduled to be released in late summer/fall of 2012. Since the transition from Bluegrass to Country, Hensley has been on the road with his five-piece band playing everywhere from New York to Los Angeles, Nebraska to Texas, Minnesota to Washington D.C. and beyond. His tours have included headlining dates in theaters and outdoor venues as well as opening for artists like Steve Wariner, former Alabama front-man Randy Owen, Sara Evans, Marty Stuart, and even Peter Frampton.
“I realize how far I have to go to achieve my dreams in music,” Hensley said, “but when I look back and see performances for the President and Vice president of the United States, for some of our wounded military heroes, and playing my music on the stage of the Grand Ole Opry and elsewhere, I recognize just how fortunate I am to get to do this for a living. I’ve got a great band, and I love singing and playing my music. As long as anybody wants to hear me, I’m going to be out there doing it!”
This is Trey’s Mel Bay Artist Interview with Erica Lee. He also teaches a Mel Bay Pro lick.

The Prize Patrol for Publishers Clearing House flew in from New York and were ready to give away some money in the Sioux Empire. However, sometimes the big surprise isn’t an easy feat.
It took some investigative work to find their winner. First they went to their apartment and no one answered. Then they started talking to neighbors.
“Often times when the prize patrol knocks on a winners door they’re not home because everybody has busy lives, so we have our tricks and we always track down our winner,” said Danielle Lam, PCH spokesperson for the Prize Patrol.
Finally with the help of the apartment manager, Kim Nelson, they tracked the lucky resident down at work.
59-year-old Carli Steffes never lost hope. She entered every day for decades, sometimes even twice a day and it payed off. She won 4.9 million dollars, the biggest lotto prize PCH has ever given away.
“Right now it was a really really tough time in my life and I needed to get out of here. And this is awesome. Sorry I’m going to cry again. But it’s just a blessing in disguise,” said Carli Steffes, PCH lotto winner.
She’s a cancer survivor and is going to use some of the money to pay off medical bills.
“I was on social security disability for ten years and I was having to pay a whole lot back. Now I can take a check and just give it to them. i’m just so happy,” said Steffes.
The first person she plans to call is a friend who told her she’d never win.
“I can tell him ‘guess what, I’m one in a million. I did it,’” said Steffes.
She has a lot of plans for the money, including helping out her family and church as well as buying a new red car.
“It’s so interesting to see the peoples stories. Everybody has a different plan for the money and you can tell that she really needed it and we see that all the time that we seem to show up just at the right time with that big check,” said Lam.
Carli says her advice is to not give up.
The prize patrol wants people to know that just because someone won in Sioux Falls doesn’t mean you should lose hope.
“We see often that in an area if there’s a big winner and it’s on the news people say ‘oh my gosh it is real.’ They start entering and we go back to the same city not long after and I’d love to come back,” said Lam.
Carli is a VIP Elite, which is a title she earned from entering the sweepstakes so frequently. Because of this she also received a $200 gift card to go out to dinner and celebrate her big win.
